Mountain Lion at First LightFull NameMountain Lion at First Light, Yellowstone National ParkArtistMark MillerDescriptionMountain Lions are seldom seen, secretive animals. To sight one in it's natural habitat is truly a rare event.
This remarkable shot captures such an event. It was taken by Gardiner, Montana photographer Mark Miller in the early morning light as the lion descends a hillside in an area between Gardiner, Montana and Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park known locally as the "Chinese Gardens." The lion had just killed a bighorn sheep just across from the Gardiner River hot springs called the "Boiling River."
The sharp focus, soft backlighting, and the lion's foggy breath make this a truly special composition.
