Early September, just after sunrise. Morning mist, combined with haze and smoke from upwind forest fires, diffuses and softens the first rays of direct sunlight. View toward the southeast. The Lamar Valley, in the northeast quadrant of Yellowstone National Park, has been called the Serengeti of North America. Osborne Russel wrote in 1836, "There is something in the wild romantic scenery of this valley which I cannot describe, but the impressions made upon my mind...were such as time can never efface them from my memory."
