Ruth Apter

Artist Ruth Apter's creative endeavors are inspired by Inuit carvings and southwest Native American fetishes. Her small ceramic sculptures are all hand formed and Raku fired.

This tedious and challenging process involves taking her creations from the kiln while still red-hot. The item is then reduction fired & smoked in a container of sawdust and oats.

Biography

"My studio overlooks the Cascade Mountains and the Olympic Mountains on the eastern tip of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State."

I am in love with growing things, creating and cooking. It is all one. I am an excellent cook and collect handcrafted kitchen items(of course!).

Artistically I am influenced by Inuit art and southwest Native American fetishes and Mexican Animalitos. The tiles are an outgrowth of constantly scribbling landscapes, birds and trees.

Handling a ceramic piece that is 2,000 degrees is dangerous...I love it! I love the way the smoke interacts with the clay. From earth to stone....the magic of the heat and my artist's imagination. I never tire of the magical process of raku firing.

From earth to stone....the magic of the heat and my artist's imagination. In the past 30 years: I have been a buyer for a fine handcraft gallery, an Artist's Rep for many, many years and currently do consulting with artists to help them develop their work & support material to succeed in wholesaling. I love working as an artist and enjoy the business side of things as well.
